Causes of Mustache Hair Loss

What Are the Causes of Mustache Hair Loss?

If your mustache hairs are falling out it could be that you are suffering from a condition called alopecia areata or from another condition called androgenetic alopecia.

Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata is an unpredictable and cyclical skin disease that can cause the hair on your scalp and elsewhere on your body, including your mustache, to fall out. This condition is an autoimmune disease that generally starts on your scalp, manifesting in small, round smooth patches where the hair has fallen out.

Features
Alopecia areata can progress to total baldness, which is called alopecia totalis, or complete body hair loss, which is called alopecia universalis, according to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation

Effects
The hair follicles do not die when you have alopecia areata. They can resume normal hair production. In fact, hair re-growth may occur without treatment.

Androgenetic Alopecia and Aging
Male hormones called androgen (testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) cause beard growth and also signal the beginning of baldness, according to Newhair.com. When DHT declines, this is going to to affect your beard growth. Testosterone impacts pubic hair and axillary hair growth. Androgenetic alopecia or hair loss occurs when DHT causes changes to the hair follicles after binding onto the cells in the follicles. DHT decreases the growing cycle of hair and increases the resting phase. The hair shaft becomes smaller over time. As a person ages, hair shrinks in width and length in each follicle.

Treatment
Treatment for this alopecia areata includes getting cortisone injections, which are given directly into the patches of bare skin. It is possible for depressions in the skin to appear after getting an injection, but these will eventually fill back in.

Other Optioins
Consider using topical Minoxidil. Using this product along with cortisone cream, which should be applied 30 minutes after applying Minoxidil, may provide the best results. Anthralin ointment or cream can be used, although it may irritate your skin and can discolor your skin temporarily. Do not get anthralin in your eyes. Wash your hands after using it.
